Special Transformers for Industrial Applications
A number of industry applications require Specific Industrial Transformers due to the usage of power (current) as a major resource for production. Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), Ladle Furnaces (LF) and high-current Rectifier and Converter Transformers need a specific design to supply the necessary power at a low voltage level. These transformer types (EAF Transformers and Ladle Furnace Transformers), as well as converter transformers for large drive applications are called special-purpose or Industry Transformers, whose design is tailor-made for high-current solutions for industry applications.
Regulating transformers in front of EAF as well as Rectifier transformers supplied by Siemens are designed for continuous and interrupted load. Short time load could reduce the size of the transformer. A higher number of switches on of the transformer, above the defined acc. IEC (more than 24 times per year) could be considered in the design for transformers used in the environment of industrial applications.
Especially in industrial applications like converter and net transformers for the oil & gas industry, the fire safety of transformers is an important topic. By using ester instead of mineral oil the assets match perfectly to the operator’s 0-harm-policies.
Thanks to the excellent properties of esters, high performance and minimal risks are no contradictories anymore. The high flash- and flamepoints of esters lead to increased fire safety in operation. At the same time the readily biodegradable insulation fluids adds to the environmental protection and even allows for operation at sea without harming aquatic life. Technically, operators may benefit from a longer lifetime of their transformers as ester is more tolerant to moisture than mineral oil and thus keeps the cellulose insulation healthy for a longer period of operation. And there are even more advantages to alternative fluids: they may allow for operation at higher temperatures than mineral oil insulated units.
