The SST-400 is a single casing steam turbine, providing geared drive to 1,500 or 1,800 rpm generators. It has a power output up to 65 MW. The modular package design allows a wide variety of configurations to satisfy the industrial customer's individual needs in the most economical way. Crack examination preferably using magnetic particle method, but liquid penetrant method also available, including:
- Welds on: Valve and nozzle chests, piping (nozzle groups, compensation, bleeding extraction and instrumentation piping, etc.), nozzles, bodies, etc.
- Radii, cross-section transitions, branches, flanges, struts. For particular attention: Admission area incl. wheel chamber.
- Bore and hole edges.
- Stud bolts especially at transition from thread to shaft.
- Stop valves, control valve stems and cages: seats and hard-faced guide surfaces.
- Steam strainers.
- Rotor: Diameter transitions and undercuts labyrinth seals welds, disk boreholes, balancing grooves.
- Blading: Rolled-in binding wire on control wheel (minor machining may be necessary), root/blade transition, damping wire boreholes, erosion craters near blade root, corrosion pitting.
- Couplings: Teeth sleeve especially oil drain boreholes, cross-section transitions, fitting key grooves.
- Bearing: Bonding between babbitt metal and bearing body.
Measurements, including:
Wall thickness measurements
- Pressure-retaining piping, in particular pipe bends.
- Cracks with recesses.
Hardness measurements
- Joint and flange stud bolts in superheated steam area.
- Highly-stressed casing areas (where replicas are taken).
- Rubbing areas on rotor.
Ultrasonic inspection, including:
- Rivet heads in guide blade shrouds.
- Bearing/babbitt metal bonding to body.
- Selected areas of casing.
- Turbine rotor (>100,000 operating hours or requent starts): Of accessible areas to determine any volume discontinuities.
- Check control wheel straddle roots for cracks (as necessary).
- Where necessary: welds, casing areas with discontinuities.
- At operating temperatures > approx. 450 °C replicas are recommended at the latest after 100,000 operating hours to check highly-stressed casing areas for creep damage.
- At ends of cracks (as necessary).
- Blue-discolored rubbing areas on rotor (as necessary).
