Energy Management for Wind Power - Siemens serves the entire product, system and solution business for the power distribution infrastructure of residential, commercial, industrial and utility markets. The division offers a wide-ranging portfolio of power distribution and circuit protection products, from 120 V to 38 kV. It includes circuit breakers, switches and MV motor controls as well as switchboards, switchgear, busway, power panels and standby power products. The division's protection and control offering encompasses power monitoring systems, electronic circuit protection, distribution automation and Smart-Gear® - Power Distribution Solution. Additionally, the division supplies energy-efficient solutions for the integration of renewable energy and electric vehicles. The 3WL air circuit breaker can be applied in both main and feeder applications and provides effective protection against overloads and short circuits. It can be fitted with a number of different electronic trip units (overcurrent releases), each with the adjustable tripping characteristics needed to provide effective protection while coordinating selectively. 3WL air circuit breakers can be equipped with features to mitigate the effects of harmonics produced by variable speed drives – harmonics which are commonly known to interfere with protective relays and to cause nuisance tripping in circuit breakers.
The power semiconductors within an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) or other energy conversion system are sensitive to short circuits and overload conditions. Incorrect overload and short circuit protective settings can result in substantial damage and expensive downtime for a wind turbine. When it is necessary to have short circuit protection that is even faster than a circuit breaker, SITOR semiconductor fuses can be used in series with the 3WL circuit breaker and will provide an ideal solution in critical applications.
When it comes to transforming the energy generated in a wind power project, some special design considerations have to be kept in mind right from the start. Transformers in this special environment have to face harmonics generation and wave distortion. Thus, local heating might cause dissolve gas generation; the insulation system is stressed much more than in conventional transformers and an additional hot spot in the winding might cause an insulation failure.
