Energy Management System (EMS)
Spectrum Power™ 3 is the result of constant system improvement over the course of the last 40 years. That is how long we have been supplying SCADA and energy management systems (EMS) all over the world. We have already delivered more than 650 network control systems for energy companies ,and of these, more than 50 are based on Spectrum Power 3 with its open, distributed system architecture.

Scalable architecture
For small system sizes, virtualization may be used to combine many functions into a single physical pair of servers. For medium systems, applications may be distributed to different physical servers. And for the largest systems, multiple blades may be assigned to a single function, such as contingency analysis.
Reliable configuration
Servers with time-critical functions are supported by an appropriate backup computer (hot standby), and additional servers protect the less critical functions. Siemens’ customers report system availability to be above 99.95% in real-world operation.
The ability to bring data model changes into the on-line system with zero down time is another factor in Siemens’ exceptional system availability record. Since our data manager is transactional, data model changes can also be undone without interrupting the system.
Open communication
The Spectrum Power 3 front end processors can communicate with remote terminal units (RTUs) using not only standard protocols such as DNP 3.0 and IEC 61870-5, but also with many legacy protocols. Multiple protocols can be supported by a single server pair, but additional servers may be added to handle whatever data flows are required.
Communication with other control centers is supported with the ICCP (TASE 2.0) protocol. Both standard and encrypted versions are available. The choice of which version to use is made on a per-remote basis and may be changed in real time.

Fast, robust and accurate state estimation
Conventional state estimation is not sufficiently robust for many systems. The requirement for a highly rugged design is in fact met by the use of orthogonal transformation techniques.
Siemens has here succeeded in making the technical breakthrough - with the Orthogonal State Estimator in Spectrum Power 3. It is both fast and robust.
