"No wahala" with Siemens
Siemens turnkey power plants are the ideal choice when it comes to supporting and improving the power supply of today’s rapidly growing and increasingly energy-hungry economic centers in emerging markets. One example is Nigeria, a country that has witnessed enormous growth over the past few years. Nigeria requires rugged, reliable, and flexible power plants of smaller size that can efficiently support the inland infrastructure and leverage the potential of the country’s vast natural gas reserves.

Along with countries such as China and India, Nigeria has made it onto the Citigroup’s list of so-called 3G (Global Growth Generator) countries – countries that experts have identified as promising growth prospects and sources of high growth and of profitable investment opportunities. According to the World Bank, Nigeria has already reached lower middle income status and is ranked 30th in the world in terms of GDP as of 2012.
Nigeria, a country of plentiful natural resources, such as natural oil and gas, is Africa’s largest economy and has high annual growth rates. Nigeria’s economy is on the way to reaching its full potential. The capital city Abuja, for instance, is best described as a huge construction site. However, power supply has been one of the weak points so far. That’s why the Nigerian government conceived a major fast-tracking initiative to add significant new generation capacity to Nigeria’s power supply system: Nigeria plans to increase the country’s generation capacity five- to eight-fold from its current level of approximately five gigawatts. The generating projects are accompanied by supporting transmission, distribution, and gas transport infrastructure projects.
The Nigerian government and the state-owned Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd. (NDPHC) developed a plan to build ten medium-sized gas-fired power plants in Nigeria. The plants are situated close to natural gas reserves. The enormous reserves of natural gas provide the ideal fuel for the plants. "Nigeria sits on one of the largest gas reserves in the whole world. Much more gas will be available for the power sector. So there will be a real match between generation capacity and the availability of gas," says Professor Chinedu Nebo, Nigeria’s Minister for Power.
Taken together, the planned network of power plants has a capacity in excess of 5,453 megawatts. One of these plants is Geregu II in the town of Ajaokuta in the Nigerian federal state of Kogi. The plant was delivered by Siemens on a turnkey basis and went into operation on schedule in May 2013.
According to James Olotu, managing director of NDPHC, "the Geregu II power plant has strategic significance when it comes to improving the power supply in our country as well as for the stability of Nigeria’s power grid." Olotu points out that the Geregu II gas-turbine power plant with its installed capacity of 434 megawatts "is a huge step in the right direction" for the country’s power supply. "This addition has actually solved a big chunk of the problem in one fell swoop!"
The turnkey project comprises three SGT5-2000E gas turbines as well as the associated SGen5-100A generators, the plant control system SPPA-T3000, and the plant’s electrical equipment, and was completed on schedule. "We’re very satisfied with how this important project has been implemented, and we’re proud to be working with Siemens," says Olotu.
Following the Afam V and Geregu I plants, Geregu II was the third gas-fired power plant to be delivered by Siemens on a turnkey basis and completed on schedule. In April 2012, Siemens representatives met with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to sign a memorandum of understanding regarding the delivery of additional power plant components.

Thanks to their reliability, robustness, and service friendliness, they are ideal for the requirements of the Nigerian market," said Lothar Balling, Exec. VP Global Project Management at Siemens.

The SGT-2000E series comprises extremely well-proven, robust engines for the 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets that can be used for simple or combined cycle processes with or without combined heat and power, and for all load ranges, particularly peak-load operation. For integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) applications Siemens offers the SGT5-2000E (LC) machine. Besides the application in power plants, the SGT5-2000E can also be used for different applications in the oil and gas industry. The compressor drive design, derived from proven standards, can be used for the production of liquefied natural gas, for instance – either as a direct mechanical compressor drive or as an all-electric generator version. The SGT5-2000E has a record for toughness and durability with more than 380 units in operation and over 16 million operating hours.
