Due to the demand for ever greater operating flexibility, energy efficiency and CO₂ reduction in power generation, the worldwide demand for gas-fired power plants is growing at a breathtaking pace.
With its comprehensive gas turbine portfolio, Siemens is one of the world’s market leaders. Gas turbines and combined-cycle power plants offer high reliability and availability, low investment costs, short construction, installation, and service times, high energy savings and energy efficiency. This results in the advantage of the highest operational readiness and flexibility. Siemens developed the most efficient and powerful gas turbine in the world, the innovative SGT5-8000H gas turbine. It is designed to generate 400 megawatts when operating just in open cycle mode and up to 600 megawatts in combined cycle mode.
Even more efficient are power plants with combined heat and power generation (CHP), which simultaneously yield electricity, heat or process steam (water vapor), and thus achieve energy efficiency levels of 60 to over 85 percent. One example is the Lausward power plant at Duesseldorf’s port, which, upon starting operation in 2016, will have an electrical output of 595 megawatts. This is a world record for a single combined-cycle block, and net efficiency will be over 61 percent. A third world best will be achieved with district heat extraction: Never before has it been possible to decouple 300 megawatts of thermal energy from a single gas turbine power plant block in combined cycle mode. As a result, the overall efficiency of the natural gas increases to 85 percent.
Siemens received several orders from Nigeria for construction of the Geregu II gas-turbine power plant, approximately 200 kilometers south of the capital Abuja. The power plant was completed on schedule in mid-2013. Geregu II is a follow-up project to the Geregu I power plant, which Siemens built back in 2006. The company supplied three SGT5-2000E gas turbines, characterized by high levels of reliability, three SGen5-100A generators, as well as all the electrical systems and the SPPA-T3000 control system. With this project the number of Siemens heavy-duty gas turbines in Nigeria increased to eight. The centrally located power plant is of strategic importance for grid stability and is a key project for power supply in Nigeria, helping the country to meet ever increasing power demands.
In Tanzania, Siemens received an order for the supply of three industrial gas turbines. The customer is the Norwegian company Jacobsen Elektro, which will build a power plant for the state-owned energy provider Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). The three SGT-800 gas turbines will be supplied to the Ubungo power plant located in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. Siemens will supply the three turbines with a combined capacity of 100 megawatts. Connection to the grid was established in late 2011. The SGT-800 is one of the most efficient industrial gas turbines on the market today. All emission requirements are below international standards and Siemens can thus provide environmentally friendly and energy-efficient fossil-fueled power generation to Dar es Salaam.
The power plant in Tahaddart – 30 kilometers south of Tangiers on the Atlantic coast – is Morocco’s first combined-cycle power plant and the first Siemens turnkey plant in the country. The SPPA-M3000 plant management used in Tahaddart optimizes the technical processes and contributes to achieve a reduction in costs. Tahaddart is the first fossil-fired power plant in Africa to be given an international environmental certification. In Wadeville, South Africa, Siemens upgraded the turbo machinery at its balancing facility. The upgrade includes the replacement of the control system on the high speed balancing machine to a PLC system and the installation of the latest state-of-the-art vibration analyses instruments. The facility, with higher levels of energy efficiency, is one of the most technologically advanced in Africa.
